Connect with an API token

  1. In Azure Boards:

    1. Sign in to your organization at https://dev.azure.com/\{organization\}.
    2. On the home page, open user settings and select Personal access tokens.
    3. Select + New Token.
    4. Enter a name, select one organization (not all organizations), and set a short expiration date.
    5. Select only the scopes required; Safeguard only reads work items, so choose read-only access rather than full access.
    6. Select Create, copy the token and store it securely; the token value doesn't appear again.

Where to find the other values:

Azure Boards shows the secret only once, so copy it before you leave the page.

An administrator can restrict PAT creation, scopes and lifetimes (Organization settings › Policies, and tenant-level policies under Organization settings › Microsoft Entra). Global PATs stop working on December 1, 2026; create an organization-scoped PAT. A PAT can't grant more than its owner has. The Work Items scope label itself was not shown on the fetched page.

    Base URL (optional)—

  3. Click Connect with token.

Frameworks

No automated compliance test reads Azure Boards yet, so no framework lists it. How connectors provide evidence for frameworks: Frameworks and connectors.
